Twenty years ago, Sue Lamond opened the Salvation Cafe, in a somewhat gritty part of downtown Newport on Broadway Avenue. At a time when Newport’s dining scene consisted mostly of clam shacks and burger joints, this tropical-themed, funky spot started serving things like vegan pad thai, and dishes with exotic global influences, as well as creative locally-sourced seafood and meat dishes. So began a the transformation of downtown Newport into one of the most diverse and dynamic little stretch of eateries in the State. We get a taste of three spots that have reinvigorate lower Broadway with fantastic food, atmosphere, live music, and a laid back local vibe: the Salvation, Pour Judgment, and Boru Noodle Bar.
