Flo’s Clamshack, located in Middletown right on the border with Newport at Easton’s Beach, is a Rhode Island institution. It is THE clamshack on Aquidneck Island, and one of the most popular in New England. There are actually two Flo’s: the original drive-through is the oldest, dating back to 1948, and is located up the road in Portsmouth. It has survived four major hurricanes, and continues to thrive to this day. But the Middletown location is iconic, and sees the most visitors. Flo’s is kind of like that perfect clam shack that you envision in your mind, and then discover actually exists. Occupying an old shingled building right off the beach, with buoys and beach signs and landfill galore, with a take-out window serving fried specialties downstairs, and a full bar, raw bar, and full-plate menu upstairs, it’s no wonder this place is always packed. You cannot come to Newport in the summer without a visit to Flo’s, it is an absolute ritual and rite of passage. And if you don’t like seafood, have no fear; there are burgers and dogs and chicken fingers and salads, and upstairs has prime rib and steaks. But seriously, would you ever come here if you didn’t love good, fresh New England seafood? Exactly.
